What is meant by ESG data?
Data describing environmental, social and governance characteristics of issuers and instruments: ratings, emissions and other metrics, controversy flags, and the classifications used to evidence a sustainability claim to a regulator or client.
Who uses ESG data?
Investment teams, compliance and client reporting.
What gets confused with ESG data?
Reference data. ESG data is substantially estimated and opinion-based, and providers disagree with each other far more than they do on identifiers. Treating it as factual reference data is a common and expensive error.
What should you ask a vendor about ESG data?
Ask what proportion of the metric is reported by the issuer and what proportion is modelled by the vendor.
