What is meant by Order management?
An order management system holds the firm's intended trades and the record of what happened to them. It takes a portfolio manager's decision, turns it into orders against specific accounts, checks them against the firm's rules, releases them for execution, and records the fills that come back so that positions and cash stay correct.
Who uses Order management?
Portfolio managers and the trading desk, with operations relying on what it records.
What gets confused with Order management?
An execution management system. The order management system is the system of record for what the firm meant to do and what it now owns; the execution management system is the tool for working an order in the market. Firms trading a few liquid instruments a day often need only the first. Firms trading actively in fragmented markets usually run both, or one platform covering both.
What should you ask a vendor about Order management?
Ask what happens to a partially filled order overnight, and how an allocation across twenty accounts is booked. Those two answers separate systems quickly.
