What is meant by Corporate actions?
Handling of events that change a holding without a trade: dividends, splits, mergers, rights issues, spin-offs. The system collects announcements, resolves conflicting versions from different sources, captures elections where the holder has a choice, and applies the result to positions and cash.
Who uses Corporate actions?
Operations, under time pressure and with real money at stake.
What gets confused with Corporate actions?
Reference data, which supplies the announcements. Corporate actions processing is what a firm does with them, including the elections a data vendor cannot make for you.
What should you ask a vendor about Corporate actions?
Ask how two vendors announcing different terms for the same event is resolved, and who is accountable when the answer is wrong.
